Alan and Ruth

Alan and Ruth are a unique birding couple who are passionate about watching birds. Born and bred in North Wales, Alan has always been passionate about birds and birdwatching. For six years, he was the Site Manager of the RSPB reserve at Conwy on the North Wales coast and developed it into a popular visitor attraction as well as a haven for wildlife. Alan has also written the successful site guide Best Birdwatching Sites in North Wales. There’s nothing Alan enjoys more than sharing exciting birds with other people.

Originally from Kent, Ruth always had a passion for the great outdoors. She worked as Head of Trading at the RSPB Head Office in Sandy, Bedfordshire before moving up to Llandudno in North Wales where she spends every possible moment exploring the countryside. Ruth has written a series of walking books called Birds, Boots and Butties.

Ruth and Alan met when they were both employed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in its important work for bird conservation. In 2008, however, they gave up their jobs and spent the whole year travelling the world birding, and set a new world record for the highest number of birds seen in a single year. This “Biggest Twitch” netted 4,341 species, or nearly half the world’s birds. They recorded their stellar year in a book called The Biggest Twitch.

Alan and Ruth settled back in North Wales after birding all around the world, and now lead tours under the name BirdwatchingTrips. They offer guided birdwatching daytrips, weekends and longer birdwatching tours in North Wales, across Britain, in Europe and further afield.
